Copyright and takedowns

The Laser Workshop is a place where makers share what they make. That only works when everyone shares work that is theirs to share. Here's how we keep it that way, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Share what's yours

  • Only share designs you made, or designs you have the rights to share.
  • Designs you buy or download for your own use are usually not yours to re-share. Check the license.
  • Characters, logos, and brand names belong to someone else. Making them for yourself is one thing; sharing the file here is another.
  • When you share a project we ask you to confirm you have the rights. That confirmation is saved with the date.

If someone copied your work

If a project, setting or file on The Laser Workshop uses your copyrighted work without permission, send us a takedown notice. U.S. law (the Digital Millennium Copyright Act) asks that a notice include:

  1. A description of the work you own.
  2. The address of each page here that uses it.
  3. Your name, email, and a phone number or mailing address.
  4. A statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't allowed.
  5. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you own the rights or act for the owner.
  6. Your signature (typing your full name counts).

Please only send a notice if you are sure. Knowingly sending a false one can make you responsible for damages.

If your work was taken down

We'll tell you what came down and why, with a reference number. Your files stay safe in your own library. If you believe we removed it by mistake, you can send a counter-notice from your account.

  • We pass your counter-notice to the person who sent the notice.
  • Unless they tell us within 10 to 14 business days that they've started a court case, we put your work back.
  • You'll need to give your name, address and phone number, and agree to a court's jurisdiction. That is what the law requires.

Repeat infringers

If we uphold 3 copyright notices about the same maker, we pause that maker's ability to share projects. Their private tools and settings keep working. A notice that is later withdrawn, reversed, or answered with a counter-notice and restored no longer counts.

Our designated agent

Notices can also go to our designated copyright agent. The form above reaches the same team.
